A keloid scar can be defined as scarring which is abnormal, and grows beyond the normal skin precincts. It will therefore look raised, and in a different colour from that of the normal skin. Some body parts are more prone for keloid scars, as are some ethnic groups.
In fact if you are Hispanic, or African-American, you are more inclined for keloid scars development. As regards to body parts, the upper part of the back, the sternum and the upper arm, are amongst the most common sites for the appearance of keloid scars.
Keloid scars may not always be severe, and may result from injection scars, chicken pox as well as acne. These types of scars would normally not require any treatment. There is however, bigger and more serious scarring, which would require treatment.
The best treatment for keloid scars would be prevention. In reality if your skin has a propensity for developing this scarring, there are limited things that you may do. One of the most important steps would be to always maintain your scars clean. In case of family history of scarring, then you should avoid getting a tattoo or a piercing, and consult your personal doctor, before you have any surgery.
Treatment for keloid scars nowadays comes in various kinds as follows:
Cortisone Injections is one of the less risky keloid scars treatment. The patient would be given an injection once monthly, until the scars are treated, with the best possible results. These injections will flatten the scarring, however sometimes; they might stimulate them and make them go red. With this treatment the patient will have a better looking skin, however even after the treatment, the area will still look and feel different.
Surgery is another keloid scars treatment which is considered risky, since the cutting may stimulate the skin, to form similar and sometimes even larger keloids. Laser treatment is another effective way of keloid scar removal, and it is not very painful. This treatment however may turn out to be quite costly, since a number of sessions are needed to get results.
Another keloid scar removal methods includes wearing on the scarred area, a sheet of silicone gel daily for a number of hours. As one might guess however, since this sheet has to be worn for a long period of time, this keloid scars removal method, is not one of the most popular.
Apart from the treatment we have discussed above, there are also other methods for keloid sacs removal such as Cryotherapy where the keloids are frozen; Interferon which is an injection of protein-like substances, as well as radiation.
